Share Rental AND a Yurt!...

I'm looking for the right person or couple to share Mt. Fusi (follow link for more pictures), my house in Hammond Ranch outside of Weed, near Mt. Shasta. There are two deals, immediately available. They can be taken together or separately:

  • Shared living space in the house for $495 per month plus utilities and very minor caretaking (i.e. sometimes forwarding my mail, scheduling service people).
  • The yurt on the property can't be used as a living space - I am offering it as a place for massage, yoga, workshops, or as an artists' studio. I'd prefer a $250 per month rental, though I am open to renting it by session depending on how you'd like to use it. It's a conversation.

Partial trade for landscaping or other services is possible, though not so much to live for free. Contact me at 415.203.3407 if you're interested.

Share Rental

This is not an ordinary place; it's an extraordinary home in a beautiful natural setting with incredible views, art and other accoutrements. There's no better view in Siskiyou County. 270 degrees, Mt. Shasta, Black Butte, Mt. Eddy; eagles soar below us. All readily taken in from the comfort of the hot tub.

In May 2007 we finished major remodeling - new hearth and wood stove, dishwasher, tile and hardwood floors throughout, nine new windows, even new walls on the entire west side of the house, the list goes on. There's a front loading washer and dryer. In summer the two person rock outdoor shower is really nice (in winter, not so much). This year I added a tiled front patio, side walkway, and a circular driveway/parking areas.

Though I'm often away and you may get comfortable with that, I expect we will welcome each other warmly when I show up! I'm easygoing and fun to be around, if I say so myself. It's quiet, but not a cave for hermits. I'm fortunate to have many talented and amazing friends, who visit me regularly. Not constantly, but frequently.

Also, due to the mountaintop location and absence of concierge services, you absolutely must be self sufficient. I need someone who will notice, then act or call for action when something needs attention. It's important we stay on top of maintenance and cleaning. You don't have to be handy yourself necessarily, but should possess the ability to repeatedly call service providers on our behalf and sometimes be around when they deign to show up. Kept up properly, the house is incredible and relaxing. But that's not always easy - it requires consciousness and appreciation...

The Yurt

Also, I have the 5 acres and two story yurt adjoining the property. I bought it right after remodeling the main house, to stop another prospective buyer who wanted to build a new house in front oft the hot tub, thereby blocking the Mt. Shasta view. That would have been seriously wrong. The yurt is a bit, how you say, not to code. The county said I can't have people living in it but I think they won't make me tear it down as long as we're nice.

It can be a workspace, for massage, art or workshops. It has a great wood stove. Still, it doesn't have a well or septic. So if someone living at the main house also used the yurt, that is the ideal situation. Otherwise it's good for occasional overnight guests, and there's even a private hiking trail between the two.

I have Honda generators for power and could install batteries. It has water from a cistern but this is not drinkable. It's a unique situation, so let's talk if you have other ideas. Unfortunately indoor agriculture is not possible...I do support Proposition 19, but need to avoid mold in the yurt!

About Me...

I own an art gallery/performance space in San Francisco and am involved with Earthdance. We're seeking funding for a social enterprise model. This uses our music and media distribution, webcasting, branding, online marketplace, entertainment and events offerings to benefit our related nonprofit focused on peace. I believe in peace, art and music - good, solid, hippie values. I also have properties in Colorado and Texas and a beachfront partnership in Costa Rica. My schedule can be absurdly busy and erratic - you might not see me for a month, then I'll be there for a week. Mt. Fusi is in fact my primary residence. The more time I spend here, the better life is.

What else?

  • I'm allergic to pets - love 'em, except unfortunately they make me sneeze - so no animals, please. Except for fish. Fish are okay, as long as you take care of them.
  • Please no tobacco smoking inside.
  • No lethal weapons. Seriously. It's a chipmunk preserve and deer, rabbits, foxes, bobcats and the occasional bear are free to cruise on by, smiling at us. Occasionally I sneeze back at them.
  • Cleanliness is good. I'm a 7 or 8 on the 10 scale, I think. I don't go up to antiseptic, but I don't go down to pigstye either. We can hire a house cleaner if that makes sense.
  • With only two bedrooms, there's just not enough room for children.
  • Hot tubbers generally don't wear suits. Most of my friends look better than me, fortunately.

I have eclectic interests in a variety of subjects, yet with opinions always open to dissection. There will be barbeques and dinner parties at the long table, with good food, laughter and conversation with notable peeps.

I eat meat, and actually really dig the gas grill. While somewhat soft around the center, I have a longstanding goal of getting in better and healthier shape. I ski in the winter, and enjoy getting out to the back country whenever possible.

About You...

The ideal housemate is progressive, and responsible, with good values and integrity. I know it's tough times all around, but I see this a refuge, a happy place. If you attract drama or live a little too close to the edge...good luck with that. Also, you should know about living in the mountains, it's different. You'll have minimal belongings, since the house is already furnished including bedroom furniture. There's some storage space in the garage, but it's limited and I would like parking my car there to remain possible. Artwork is welcome, though it may be hard to find a place to hang since there's more windows than wall space. It's easy to feel at home here, though, definitely. Great Feng Shui! I'd like to find a friendly nature loving person who appreciates this place, I think it's quite special.

About Country Livin'...

I'll be honest: weather can be wild in the winter. The previous owners disclosed in escrow, "...the roof blew off but we fixed it". That was mainly due to construction defects - I've rebuilt it all again since. I think it should stay on now. I do everything possible make sure maintenance happens. It can be a real ordeal to get service people to actually show up in this area. I need someone who appreciates the house and is positive, happy and content with the tradeoff between diligence and joy that is an essential aspect of being here.

In winter, 4wd is pretty much a necessity - we are a mile and a quarter off the paved road. The road is cleared semi-regularly, but can be rough/impassable after storms. Once I was snowed in for three days. Now that I have the yurt, there's a lower parking area closer to the paved road. Still, that can get snowy, too. It's difficult to generalize, but normally access is a struggle maybe a week or two in the average winter. Most of the time it's fine, we're at 4000 feet elevation.

You will be living with nature; the manzanita is alive with small nibbling, flying and crawling creatures. They have their charm, but sometimes the little suckers try getting into the house. So far we've been able to keep the bears out.

I pay for major repairs (rule of thumb, anything over $100) but it shouldn't kill you to buy light bulbs. We can talk about satellite TV, which you could get but it is way overpriced in my opinion. After clearing the fire break we replanted with native wildflowers that could use watering every once in a while. There is a further list of improvements, which I will get to as time passes.

I think this covers most things, though I'm of course open to questions and conversation. You can reach me at 415.203.3407 (cell). I am also available by email, nospam2004 (at) fusso.com.
